Are you looking to brighten up your classroom or creative space this winter? Well, you have come to just the right place. My students have been busy creating some fun, mixed media landscapes inspired by German Expressionist artists. Their love of color and bold patterns is expressed on their canvases. This project requires lots of little hands creating many parts to create a whole

Hot Cocoa and Snow Day Students

Living in Ohio we see all different types of weather. I know my students love snow days why, who wouldn't?  A free day off of school, playing in the snow, drinking hot cocoa!  Here are a couple of projects my students created  to welcome the winter season. Snow Day Students Day 1. 3rd grade students created an argyle pattern on construction paper with pencil, criss

Georgia O'Keeffe Skulls

Georgia would love to adventure around her home in New Mexico and would find various skulls out on her trips through out the desert. These skulls were our inspiration for our paper and model magic skulls. Students folded 9 x 12 paper in half then used pencil to write or print their name.  We then drew a line around their name and students cut (with the paper still folded) along the pencil

Blast Off…..

3,2,1  I just love the contrast of black and white, so to add to our thematic unit on Space I had my current 3rd graders create their own black and white spaceship. This was done within two 40 minutes classes. One class for adding pencil designs with very simple shapes and the other class period painting and outlining with one color of paint.  I have five 3rd grade classes. I wanted to

Ladder to the Moon

3rd grade students examined the beautiful painting that Georgia O'Keeffe created at her home in New Mexico  then created their own. History A long, homemade ladder used to lean against Georgia's house at Ghost Ranch so that she could climb up onto the roof and gaze out at the vast desert landscapes. Sometimes she would even climb up there several times a day. At night she would climb up

Georgia and The Great Southwest Part One- Mt. Pedernal

“It’s my private mountain. It belongs to me.  God told me if I painted it enough, I could have it.”  Georgia O’Keeffe Pedernal -1942 The mountains of New Mexico were among O’Keeffe’s favorite subjects to paint. The flat-topped Cerro Pedernal, a unique mesa near the town of Abiquiu, fascinated her.  She referred to it as her mountain and joked,  “God told me if I

I have been using painted paper for a while, it just really adds spectacular color to students work. This project was a combination of tempera painted birds shapes with painted paper details such as feathers, claws, beaks. etc.   I had my 3rd graders use a template to get started, (this class has some severe special needs and I put out a template to get them started as well as feel

the path to grandma's house

Have you ever wondered what the path to grandma’s house would look like in  the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood? I read to the students Little Red Riding Hood written by Brothers Grimm with illustrations  done by Bernadette Watts.  The drawings in this book are so delicate I wanted my students to create their own version of a delicate field of flowers and trees.
